8 Best Free Android Apps for Photo Editing

Android cameras just keep getting better. They’ve got great movie-making capabilities, killer flashes, and the megapixels are on the rise with each new Android device that hits the market.

But even the best photos — and the best camera phone photographers — sometimes need a bit of TLC. Whether your latest snap needs a little Lomo touch or you need to crop a stranger out of an otherwise perfect party pic, you could use a few good Android (Android) apps for taking and editing perfect photos. Here are 8 awesome apps for taking advantage of your Android device’s camera. If you’ve got faves we didn’t mention here, be sure to let us know about them in the comments.

1. PicSay

Rating (Rating): 4.5 stars
Price: FREE
Downloads: >250,000

PicSay was an app recommended to us by our Twitter (Twitter) followers. This powerful photo editor lets users correct color, crop images, add text in word balloons or as titles, and apply special effects. Users can also add sticker-like graphics to their photos. The interface is simple for just about anyone to use. PicSay Pro is also available in the Android Market (Android Market) for €2.99 (around $3.83) and helps users remove red-eye and apply more sophisticated effects such as cross-processing and color splashes.

2. FxCamera

Rating: 4.5 stars
Price: FREE
Downloads: >250,000

FxCamera lets users apply a bunch of fun, cool effects to photographs. Effects include ToyCam, Polandroid, Fisheye, SymmetriCam and Warhol. This app is equivalent to several popular iPhone camera apps like CameraBag, Picoli or PhotoBox and is a great (and free) cure for iPhone envy.

3. Photoshop.com Mobile

Rating: 3.5 stars
Price: FREE
Downloads: >250,000

This app comes from Photoshop (Adobe Photoshop), the granddaddy of all photo editing software. Photoshop.com Mobile lets users crop and rotate images, adjust color and apply effects. It’s not as highly rated as similar free apps, however, and users have noted that the app is a bit slow and lacks important features like photo filters and a wide range of visual effects.

4. Vignette

Rating: 4.5 stars
Price: £2.99 ($4.49)
Downloads: 5,000-10,000

This app adds film and flash effects to your Android camera’s arsenal. Vignette features 46 effects, 15 frames, a self-timer and zoom and crop features. Effects include Lomo and toy camera filters, Polaroid-style effects, cross-processing and tilt-shift. Here’s a video review for those of you considering dropping the cash for this app:

5. Camera ZOOM FX

Downloads: 10,000-50,000

This app packs a slew of useful features. 40 photo effects, zoom functions, photo bursts, timers, stable shot, white balance, grids and sound activation will help the serious Android photog up his or her game, and social media mavens will appreciate the app’s Twitter and Facebook integration and geotagging capabilites. Here’s a video demo of the app:

6. Finger Paint

Rating: 4 stars
Price: FREE
Downloads: >250,000

Finger Paint is basically a version of MS Paint for Android. It’s a touchscreen interface that allows the user to color and draw over photos or other images or on a blank canvas. Finger Paint is particularly recommended for youngsters.

7. Snap Photo Pro

Rating: 4 stars
Price: $0.99
Downloads: 10,000-50,000

This well-rounded photography app includes a timer, multi-shot bursts, stability mode, brightness and contrast adjustment, zoom features and photo filters. Some users with other devices say it beats built-in camera features by a mile.

8. Camera Illusion

Rating: 4 stars
Price: FREE
Downloads: 50,000-250,000

This app lets users add effects, masks and filters to their photos in real-time. There’s even an ASCII filter if you want to get truly nerdy. Some users complain the app runs slow, but for a fun, free app, Camera Illusion is worth a look.
