FIFA World Cup 2010: a first group recap of matches

Written by Nick Doms

All the group members have played at least one match in the FIFA World Cup 2010 and it is time to take an inventory and a first look at the highlights as well as the disappointments.

South Africa opened the games in Johannesburg with a game against Mexico in group A and got away with a tie. It is not expected that the host will advance but the game against Uruguay may determine their destiny in the group’s standings.

South Korea and Argentina both won their first game to secure a 3 point lead over their rivals Nigeria and Greece in group B.

Nobody expected Slovenia to take the lead in group C with Team USA and England as the favorites, but a tie between the two rivals certainly opened the door, at least for the time being.

The most dominant game so far was the 4-0 victory of Germany over Australia. Ghana is still in the hunt for a second place finish and can advance to the final 16 with a win over Australia on June 19th.

Group E, consisting of Netherlands, Japan, Cameroon and Denmark, is under control of The Netherlands right now, but do not underestimate the intensity that Cameroon can bring to the field.

Italy, the defending champions, disappointed in their first lineup and it is anybody’s game to win the two top spots in order to advance to the next round.

Brazil and Spain entered the on month soccer spectacle in South Africa as the favorites, being ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the Coca-Cola World Ranking. Neither one of them really enticed the fans nor the viewers. Spain lost its first match against Switzerland but Brazil at least secured a win against an aggressive North Korean team.

Overall the first games had their highlights and their disappointments, but that is what soccer is all about. Everybody looks at the rankings and expectations are high, but once on the field the tide can change based on motivation, spirit and agility.
