Former US President Bill Clinton Taken to Hospital with Chest Pain
Former U.S. President Bill Clinton was taken to a New York City hospital Thursday after suffering chest pains and underwent a procedure to improve blood flow to his heart.
Douglas Band, a counselor to Mr. Clinton issued a statement saying the former president was admitted to Columbia Presbeyterian Hospital in New York after feeling what he called “discomfort in his chest.”
The statement said Mr. Clinton visited his cardiologist and then underwent a procedure to place two stents in one of his coronary arteries.
A stent is a tube that is inserted into an artery to keep it open and improve blood flow to the heart. They are commonly used to relieve symptoms such as chest pain.
Brand said in the statement that the 63-year-old former president is in “good spirits” and would continue to focus on the work of his Foundation and as the United Nation’s Special Envoy for Haiti’s relief and recovery effort.
Mr. Clinton was in Haiti for a second time less than a week ago following the earthquake there last month.
In 2004, the former president underwent a successful quadruple bypass operation to free four blocked arteries.
