Google to Deliver Ultra-Fast Internet Access
Google says it will set up a new test network in some communities that will give its customers internet access 100 times faster than the system currently available in most of the United States.
Google officials say the experimental system will be deployed in small areas of the United States and serve 50,000-500,000 customers.
Company officials at the Internet search firm say higher speeds might help doctors by giving them extraordinarily detailed video pictures of patients at distant locations. Ultra high speed would also slash the time needed to download high-definition feature films, and would likely encourage innovative uses of the Internet.
U.S. regulators who oversee the communications industry say they welcome Google’s move. The Federal Communications Commission said recently it will soon unveil a plan to improve Internet access across the nation.
Analysts interviewed by news organizations say Google’s experiment may pressure the large companies that currently carry most Internet traffic to offer higher speeds and allow users to run any programs they wish on the services.
Google is the world’s largest Internet search company. Google makes money by selling advertising to companies trying to sell things to the Internet users who use Google as their search engine.
