iPhone iOS 4: Available Today
Do you own an iPhone 3GS or third-generation iPod touch? Congratulations, you’ll be able to run several of your third-party apps at the same time today.
Apple will be releasing new software for the iPhone, iOS 4, Monday. It’s the same software that will be included with Apple’s new iPhone, due Thursday. Unlike the iPhone 4, however, it’s free.
And it includes a few features worth getting excited about. And why not? Ever since Apple introduced the original iPhone in January 2007, smart phones have been as much about software as they have been about hardware.
To be sure, Apple’s new software doesn’t work at all the original iPhone or iPod touch. And one of the best new features — multitasking — only works on the iPhone 3GS or the latest iPod touch.
However if you’ve got an iPhone 3G, 3GS you’re good to go. Same with the second and third generation iPod touch.
Some highights:
* Multitasking for third-party apps –Apple has taken a careful approach here, giving developers tools that should allow them to strip an app down to the basics and let it run in the background. The goal is to preserve batter life and to avoid slowing down the phone’s responsiveness.
* Folders — If you collect a lot of Apps, this will help you better manage the sprawl. Drag one app icon onto another. The new software will create a new folder, and give it a name based on the app’s App Store category. Apple says this will let users manage up to 2,000 apps on their iPhone.
* Improved mail — this update will let users see messages from many email accounts i a single inbox. Users can also organize their email into threads, just as Gmail does.
* iAds — Along with a bundle of new features, the new software comes with a new way for Apple to put ads in front of you. Apple’s new system lets developers insert advertisements with video and interactive content into their app. Developers get 60 percent of the cut.
* iBooks — this puts the electronic book reader and the online bookstore now on Apple’s iPad onto the iPhone. It will work best with the iPhone 4, thanks to its higher-resolution display.
* Bluetooth Keyboard Support — Want to crank out a document using a full-sized keyboard and your pocket sized phone? Now you can pair up any bluetooth-friendly keyboard with your iPhone.
