Attack aimed at Pakistan military mosque

RAWALPINDI, Pakistan, Dec. 4 (UPI) — At least 40 people, including four attackers, died Friday when militants struck a military mosque in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, Pakistani officials said.

The attackers struck Parade Lane mosque in the afternoon just as Friday prayers ended, The Nation reported. They threw grenades and then opened fire, killing 27 civilians — 17 of them children and some of them retired soldiers — and nine serving soldiers, one a major general and another a brigadier, Inter Services Public Relations said.

Officials said there were at least six men involved in the assault.

Ameer Sheikh, a retired officer, said the gunmen shot some of the worshipers execution-style, grabbing them by the hair and firing at close range, The Daily Telegraph of London reported. His son said the attackers also fired at the women’s section of the congregation.

“It was very terrible inside,” Nasir Ali Sheikh told the Telegraph. “There were two people wearing belts with grenades and bullets. … For 15 to 20 minutes, we were helpless and hopeless.”

The attack was the sixth in Rawalpindi and Islamabad in the past three months. Militants have stepped up assaults as payback for the military offensive in South Waziristan.
